BOBBY GRIFFIN JR.
CONTEMPORARY GUITARIST, COMPOSER, INSTRUCTOR
Bobby Griffin Jr. was born and raised in Fresno, California in 1959, to Ruthie and Bobby Griffin. In 5th grade, his father gifted him with his first guitar with which, under the instruction of Larry Hudspeth, he developed his craft and learned to play gospel music. Over the course of his youth, his love of music grew immensely and in 1980 he studied under the guidance of Gospel guitar legend Chalmers “Spanky” Alford, an experience he regards as his “most prized possession.”
In 1981 Bobby moved to Los Angeles, California, initiating his noteworthy career onstage with R&B legends Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Gladys Knight, and Dionne Warwick, as well as gospel icons like Kirk Franklin, Andraé and Sandra Crouch, Kurt Carr, and the L.A. Mass Choir. Prior to this, he served under Howard McCray, Patrick Henderson, and Judith McAllister; as well as gospel projects for Keith Pringle, Norman Hutchens, and James Cleveland.
During his career, Bobby has performed across Europe with the Harlem Gospel Singers and has ventured to Dubai, playing with the R&B Group, We Have Evolved Together. His musical success further permitted him to accompany Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, Byron Cage, Bishop Paul Morton, Tye Tribbett, Martha Munizzi, and Tramaine Hawkins, to name a few.
In 2001, he studied music formally at Fresno City College. Since then, Bobby has become a dedicated music educator teaching lessons in-person and virtually for international students. Bobby has served as the Minister of Music for various churches and local bands in Fresno and he was recognized as a performing artist at Kevin Wilson’s International Musicians Summit.
Bobby Griffin Jr. continues to play regularly, develop new instructional materials and host his own popular YouTube channel. He has also published instructional guitar courses on Soundslice.com.
As a recording artist, Bobby G enjoyed recent success at radio with his single, Dearing Avenue in 2019. His follow up offering, Samba Heights, promises not to disappoint, by elevating his fans to his savvy guitar samba nuances. Produced by Gail Jhonson, of Jazz in Pink and Grammy winning guitarist, Norman Brown fame. This single is sure to be well received; as Gail brings her piano chops, producer skills and smooth jazz celebrity from Shanachie Entertainment. Bassist Sekou Bunch, and Drummer Tony Moore rounds out the ensemble. Mixed by London’s own Mike Parlett, “Samba Heights” delivers a jam packed and energetic groove!
